BoHo Dresses

I’m crazy for 70s bohemian dresses. I love how they look for day, and I love their casual, sexy, “I just threw this on” vibe for night (I always wear them with boots.) They’re comfortable…usually loose-fitting (great belted!)…yet long and lean. This one is exceptional, with its fabulous patchworking of fabrics, hankie hem, fitted waist and kimono sleeves. Zips up the back. Measures 26″ waist, 52″ long.

The 1920s were a time of great creativity, in literature, art, and especially fashion, because women were allowed to express themselves through clothing for the first time. Bright colors, wild prints, bohemian influences, and of course shorter hemlines became wildly popular. Crochet was also a huge trend in the ’20s, and I seek out these rare pieces because I’m a huge fan of crochet. This dress is all handmade, in a beautiful rayon yarn. Love the fringe! A rare but very wearable piece. Measures 38-44″ bust, 32-40″ waist, 32-44″ hips, 12″ sleeves (underarm to end of fringe), 41″ length (to end of fringe.) Excellent condition!

Wraps for a great fit. Love the uneven, ruffled hemline. In beautiful semi-sheer cotton voile. Tag reads, “Ingenue of California. Hand Washable.” You really only need to worry about the waist size with these, and assume the bust is about 10″ larger (impossible to measure due to the wrap style.) Measures 24-26″ waist, 46″ long.

"Hippie chic" is a style that I feel never goes out of fashion. It's casual, comfortable, feminine and incredibly stylish. This dress is made from a soft rayon in a beautiful muted print. Looks great with a belt but with its fitted waist, it also looks great without one. Fabulous balloon sleeves. Label reads, "Applause Creates Rave Reviews" (the line was sold in Neiman Marcus's junior department.) Zips up the back. Measures 30" waist, open bust, 42" long.

When people ask me what my favorite look is, I always say “rich hippie.” I love the casual, confident look the hippies possessed, yet I prefer their look as interpreted by Saks or Bergdorf’s. This dress  is definitely from the “flower power” era yet has an elegance the hippies wouldn’t have cared for. These dresses are very, very rare, but I occasionally find one. Two wonderful layers of silk, so it’s got a sheer look without requiring a slip. Tag reads, “Saks Fifth Avenue Young Dimensions” (Saks’ young, trendy department in the 60s and 70s.) Measures 34″ bust, 23″ waist, 52″ long (slightly adjustable since it’s a wrap.)

I love anything with kimono sleeves, a hankie hem, a fabulous print…this dress has it all. You have the option to belt this dress, but it’s got a great fitted silhouette so it’s not necessary. Zips up the back. Measures 38″ bust, 30″ waist, 54″ long.

Wrap dresses are so easy to wear…comfortable yet sexy. Because you drape and tie it yourself, it's forgiving, and fits various sizes. 99% of these are made from polyester, but I seek out the ones made of natural, sheer cotton voile. You really only need to worry about the waist size with these, and assume the bust is about 10" larger (impossible to measure due to the wrap style.) Measures 24-26″ waist, 44″ long.

The detail in this dress is amazing. The fabric was cut to accentuate the design…something you rarely see anymore, as it is very expensive and requires extra fabric. But look at how beautiful the effect is, as the floral pattern frames the deep v-neck and continues down to the hem on a diagonal. It’s also bias-cut (another expensive choice, as it requires more fabric) and has full angel sleeves (ditto.) Made from a semi-sheer georgette. Measures bust 36″, 26-31″ elastic waist, 47″ long.

This is such a great, sexy style. Zips up the back and ties for a great fit. Fabric is a lightweight silky nylon. Measures 38″ bust, 32″ waist (ties in back, so adjustable smaller), 19″ sleeves, 44″ length.
